Vocalist Devonecia Swartz and multi-instrumentalist Wilken Calitz, are a Cape Town-based duo with an afro-acoustic pop sound. Most recently they have been nominated for a kykNET Fiësta award for Beste Musiekgedrewe produksie: Podium.
‘Mzansi Lullaby’ is a slick and simple music video highlighting their original lyrics and music. The clothing label, Unknown Union, provided the finishing touches with their African-chique outfits.
‘Mzansi Lullaby’ was directed by Lindsey Appolis known first and foremost as an incredible photographer (Behind the scenes photographer for the films: Noem my Skollie, Nommer 37, Barakat) and worked on Netflix’s Blood and Water. Eva du Preez edited the music video and is known for her work on Kanarie, Poppie Nongena and Die Seemeeu.
Their EP, which launched at Suidoosterfees 2019, comprises of five original compositions in Afrikaans and English.
Devonecia Swartz is a choir singer at heart. If she’s not in front of the microphone she is still on stage but as an actress. Most recently she won the 2019 KKNK Kanna Award for Best Upcoming Artist. She’s a fan of jazz music, choral singing and the colour yellow.
Wilken Calitz specializes in acoustic guitar and violin.
He is known for his versatile styles; from founding member of the satirical Afrikaans, duo Die Skynmaagde, to Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nomination for Best Original Soundtrack for his African-Avantgarde music for the production Kristalvlakte.
His participation as a soloist on internationally released feature films includes: Die Wonderwerker, Skoonheid and Dis Ek, Anna. His début solo, all-original instrumental album Chromatique, was launched in October 2017 and most recently he composed the soundtrack for the series Honger, currently showing on VIA TV.
