The Summer evenings are in full swing and Cape Town’s most exciting movie experience, The Galileo Open Air Cinema, has a feast of films to keep you entertained throughout the season – from romantic comedies, family fun nights and old-time classics, there’s a little something for everyone.
The cinemas, which are spread out across the city, are perfect for a romantic date, an evening out with friends. From the stunning backdrop of the quarry cliffs at Hillcrest, to the city lights and harbour view at the Waterfront, to the splendour of the gardens at Kirstenbosch, open-air cinemas, a relatively new concept in South Africa, have been going for quite some time all over the world – and they’re hugely popular.
Doors to each venue open at 6pm sharp and the movie starts as soon as it is dark (between 7.30 and 8.15pm). Arrive early to reserve your spot, blankets and backrest are available for hire and don’t forget to bring some extra cash. Delicious food, wine and bar drinks will be on sale throughout the show at Hillcrest Quarry and local artisanal food vendors will have a large variety of delectable specialties on offer to enjoy, picnic-style, at Kirstenbosch and the V&A Waterfront. Alternatively, take advantage of the cosmopolitan vibe at the Waterfront and visit one of the many food outlets before or after the show.
Dress up for the occasion, there will be a resident photographer at each venue and the Galileo’s team of movie buffs will be handing out complimentary tickets to the best-dressed person – think burlesque for Moulin Rouge, Darth Vadar, Luke Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi for Star Wars, kitsch but cool for Zoolander and of course, there’s nothing like a man in uniform for Top Gun – whatever the movie, make an occasion of it, from start to finish.
