Internationally recognised reggae headliner, Gentleman comes to Cape Town with his Sound System Show as part of Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference.
German-born Gentleman set foot in Jamaica about two decades ago, and ever since then has been spreading his love for reggae music all over the globe. Having recently launched his sixth album titled New Day Dawn, the 39 year old has undoubtedly made a name for himself on the international music scene. The multi-award winning, stadium selling artist is recognised as one of the most important reggae artists of our time and will be playing a vital part in the Breathe Sunshine African Music conference and Unity Jam – a highly anticipated event powered by Black Mango set to take place on 14, 15 and 16 February in Langa Township, Cape Town.
Gentleman knows how to create the perfect balance between roots-reggae, dancehall, pop and hip-hop. His new album is all about new beginnings in his personal life as well as his musical roots. “I believe it is a new chapter, for me personally I have taken a big step towards reaching my goal of truly expressing myself through music,” says the artist.
This will be his first time performing in South Africa as part of an African tour organised by the Goethe-Institute that will also include shows in Dakar, Abidjan and Lagos.
His influences come from post-revolution Jamaica – a period before the elections that was infused with a sense of excitement but also uncertainty. “What is going to happen with this new found freedom? Is it strong enough to hold its ground against religious fanaticism? How the democracy should be shaped?” were some of the questions he’d ask himself.
Now the artist is set to grace Cape Town with his influential presence. Bearing all the questions he had when forming the album, he will be performing with other local artists such as Jeremy Loops, Ifani, Diloxclusiv feat Jimmy Dludlu, Trenton and Free Radical, Mighty, Fosta, Youngsta, DJ Realrozanno, Teba, Crosby and West Gees, at the Breathe Sunshine African Music Conference and Unity Jam that will be held in Langa.
In addition to an impressive line-up of artists, there will be food, bars, market stalls as well as safe, accessible parking. This event is one of the first ever cross cultural events, and aims in uniting and bringing people together through a wide range of music genres. With his message and unique blend of musical styles, the Gentleman Sound System is sure to be a great guidance in inspiring and empowering the public of Cape Town.
“Today we know that most things are more complex than we can grasp initially, that things take a lot longer to unfold than we expect. I still believe in the good in people, morals and a sense of equilibrium, even if we are thrown off balance from time to time.” – Gentleman
