This weekend the Red Bull BC One breaking competition returns to Cape Town for another set of B-Boy face-offs in search of South Africa’s Champion – the B-Boy or B-Girl will represent South Africa in the World Final in Amsterdam later this year.
The top 16 contestants made up of six wild cards – from around the country that automatically progress to the finals based on their performance during the year – with the remaining top contestants selected from the Last Chance Qualifier on Thursday, 27 April will compete in the national final.
The six wild card contestants are Jo’burg’s own B-Boy Bashi returning to the BC One stage, PE’s free-styling B-Boy Rhythm, Cape Town’s B-Boy Bax, B-Boy Mouse and no stranger to blow-ups, power moves and originality B-Boy Toufeeq along with Durban’s B-Boy Bizzo.
This year the contestants will have the opportunity to be mentored by esteemed Red Bull BC One All Star from Brazil, Neguin, at a public dance workshop on Friday, 28 April and get to prove their skills for a chance to be in the national final the next day.
The Brazillian is eager to scope out the local breaking talent on his visit: “I’m very excited to see what the South Africa B-Boys bring to the table. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the new generation participating in this competition and I expect to see great potential.”
The highly-respected B-Boy describes his style as involving death-defying jumps, blitz-speed movement, unpredictability, clean execution of his arsenal and variations in each ground and power move, infused with flavour and high energy while keeping a constant rhythm – formidable inspiration for South Africa’s up and coming B-Boys!
Having won the Red Bull BC One World Final in 2010, Neguin has some serious experience and encourages would-be breakers to just get started: “If you want to get into breaking don’t waste your time, the time is now. Hip Hop is universal, listen to the music, feel it.
What else is Neguin looking forward to on his trip? “I’m excited to see the South African culture, the food, the music and to connect with my people,” he says.
The Red Bull BC One series of events will take place from Thursday 27 – Saturday, 29th April at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal, V&A Waterfront.
