To help you raise a toast to those bright sunny days lying just over the horizon, the Belgian Beer Company is tapping into the growing demand for fruit-infused beers with the launch of Liefmans Yell’Oh on local shelves.
The release of Liefmans Yell’Oh follows in the footsteps of Liefmans Fruitesse, the world’s first fruit-infused beer specifically brewed to be enjoyed over ice.
While Liefmans Fruitesse was all about bright berry notes, Liefmans Yell’Oh celebrates the sunshine-splashed flavours of sparkly pineapple. Those pineapple notes are backed up by delicate hints of lime, apple, elderflower and basil to deliver a glass full of fragrant fruit with a lively bubble. And, at just 3.8%, it’s the perfect low-alcohol refresher for hot summer days.
Yell’Oh certainly pushes the boundaries of beer with its fruity bite, but offers up a delightfully refreshing taste for both beer-lovers and those new to the brew.
“Fruit-flavoured beers are doing incredibly well at the moment, both in South Africa and internationally,” explains Rejeanne Vlietman, Managing Director of the Belgian Beer Company, who says that despite the fruity fun of Yell’Oh it is most definitely still a beer.
“With Belgian beers, there’s real integrity behind the brewing process, but they also have the freedom to get creative with their beers, and as the days warm up fruit-based beers like Liefmans Yell’Oh offer a wonderful alternative to heavier, high-alcohol brews.”
Liefmans is one of the world’s oldest breweries, nd has been brewing its unique range of beers since 1679, using innovative techniques such as mixed fermentation, blending young and old beers, and extended bottle ageing in the cellars of the Oudenaarde Brewery.
But unlike the full-bodied beers Belgian brewers have long been famous for, the light and fragrant Yell’Oh is intended as an apéro, an aperitif to be enjoyed before a sumptuous meal with good friends and good food. Or pour it over ice, as the brewers recommend, and you’re all set to toast the sunset this summer.

Not sure where to crack open your first bottle of Yell’Oh? Why not head north out of Cape Town and find yourself a sprawling field of bright yellow spring daisies. Up in Gauteng, show your support for the golden garb of the Amakhosi as Kaizer Chiefs climb the table in the Premier Soccer league. Or perhaps pack your bags for a road-trip to the Eastern Cape: the quirky village of Bathurst is home to the world’s largest manmade pineapple.
But wherever you choose to sip on a sultry sparkling Yell’Oh, make sure you’ve got the right gear.
“Traditionally Belgian beers should be poured in their own unique glass, and Yell’Oh is no exception,” explains Vlietman, who recommends Yell’Oh is served on the rocks in the signature stemless bowl-shaped glass. “All Belgian beer glasses, with the exception of pilsner, have very wide necks to really show off the aromas of the beer.”
Liefmans Yell’Oh is available at retailers and restaurants, at a recommend price of R29.00 to R32.00 for 250ml, in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Multi-bottle gift packs including the stemless Yell’Oh glasses are also available at selected retailers.
