Roodeberg 1949 impresses international palates

The commemorative Roodeberg 1949 red blend has been selected as one of Decanter’s 2022 Wines of the Year. A gold medallist with a score of 96/100, the maiden 2017 vintage also excelled in the London based 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards.

Adding depth to the illustrious 70-year-old Roodeberg brand legacy, this multi-faceted, ultra-premium blend embraces the revival of exciting French and Spanish varieties. The new 2018 vintage just released, is a consummate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Carignan, Carménère, Petit Verdot and Grenache noir.

Each variety brings something unique to the blend resulting in a wine of exceptional concentration and finesse. Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo lend structure and intensity, while the Carignan and Carménère contribute spicy intrigue and depth of flavour.

Greg Sherwood, UK Master of Wine considers the 2018 vintage “another very impressive creation and a very worthy follow-up blend.”  The wine is produced from premium Stellenbosch grapes grown on Grondves Farm, a historical site used for the development of mother plant material for the South African wine industry.

“Much like the maiden release, the new Roodeberg 1949 displays wonderfully seductive aromatics,” is how Sherwood defines the inviting bouquet. He is equally complimentary about the palate, pronouncing the texture as “drop-dead gorgeous.”

And for his final take: “This is a wine that always shows an impressive balance, superb depth of flavour and plenty of poise.”

This concentrated, deep ruby red blend has generous aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant and dried herbs, followed by a mouthful of cinnamon, sweet spice and ripe, juicy dark fruit. Firm tannins lend structure and an enduring finish.

Ever evolving with a rich heritage, the name Roodeberg resonates in the hearts and minds of wine lovers the world over. Roodeberg 1949 continues this tradition as a contemporary blend with universal appeal; a wine that is imminently drinkable and accessibly yet complex enough to age beautifully.
