History was made this week when Blaauwklippen’s head winemaker, Narina Cloete, was crowned Woman Winemaker of the Year at the prestigious LUMO Awards.
The accolade places her at the forefront of a powerful shift in the South African wine industry, where women are increasingly recognised as leaders of excellence, innovation, and craftsmanship.
At the same ceremony, Blaauwklippen Estate—where Cloete has led the winemaking team since 2016—earned four major honours. The estate received Double Gold for its 2023 Chardonnay and 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gold for its 2022 Malbec and 2020 De Blaauwe Klip vintages, reinforcing its position as one of Stellenbosch’s top-performing wine estates.
“Wine tells a story of people and places, and few places have as rich a history as Stellenbosch as the home of some of the world’s most celebrated wines. I’m incredibly proud to lead such a dedicated team at Blaauwklippen and to see our wines recognised alongside the many outstanding wines produced in Stellenbosch,” she notes.
“For me, this award is not only a personal honour but also serves as an important celebration of the many women who are working to bring fresh vision to South African wine.”
Women Are Redefining the Future of South African Winemaking
Cloete is part of a growing generation of women transforming the South African wine landscape—from viticulturists and cellar masters to marketers and business leaders. These women are blending the country’s deep winemaking heritage with bold ideas, new techniques, and global ambition, helping brands like Blaauwklippen expand their reach.
“Many of the country’s most innovative wines today are being crafted by women. Viniculture is about balance – on the vineyard, in every cask, and in every bottle. By nurturing female talent, we move toward an industry shaped equally by men and women.” she explains.
Celebrating quality and integrity in winemaking
The LUMO Awards have become a key fixture on the South African wine and spirits calendar. Judged exclusively by women, the awards welcome entries from all producers while placing special emphasis on recognising female-led wineries and women who have made a significant impact in the industry.
Cloete’s recognition reflects her two decades of excellence. After graduating cum laude in Oenology from Stellenbosch University, she gained experience at leading estates including Glen Carlou, Dornier, AA Badenhorst, and Stellenzicht. She became head winemaker at Quoin Rock in 2010 before joining Blaauwklippen, where she has built a reputation for consistency, artistry, and the ability to express the unique terroir of Stellenbosch.
Her expertise extends beyond the cellar. Cloete has served as a judge on respected panels such as the Veritas Awards, the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, and Spain’s Zarcillo International Wine Competition. Despite her global exposure, she remains committed to preserving the identity and authenticity of South African wine.
“Visibility is power. When young women see awards celebrating other women, it tells them they belong. Our responsibility is to keep opening pathways for them to succeed.” she concludes.
