The 2026 Wine Harvest Commemorative Event returns on Thursday, 5 February 2026, inviting South Africans and global wine lovers to celebrate one of the most significant traditions in the South African wine industry. Hosted at Groot Constantia, the country’s oldest wine-producing estate, the event marks 367 years of winemaking heritage, commemorating the first recorded Cape wine made on 2 February 1659.
As the official opening of South Africa’s annual wine harvest season, the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event honours the journey of South African wine—from historic vineyards to international recognition. Each year, this prestigious gathering celebrates the people, innovation, and dedication that continue to shape the industry.
Set against the backdrop of Groot Constantia’s iconic Cape Dutch architecture, rolling vineyards, and mountain views, guests will enjoy an elegant black‑tie evening featuring beautifully styled tables, ambient lighting, exceptional wines, live entertainment, and the highlight of the night—the traditional blessing of the new harvest. It is a rare opportunity to share an evening with winemakers, cellar teams, sommeliers, and industry leaders as they welcome a new season of growth.
At the heart of the event is the annual recognition of outstanding contributors to the South African wine sector. Honourees are celebrated across five key categories that represent the pillars of the industry:
• 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership
• Growing Inclusivity
• Wine Advancement
• Viti- and Viniculture
• Wine Agri-Worker Recognition
For those unable to attend in person, the celebration extends beyond Groot Constantia. Wine lovers are encouraged to host their own harvest gatherings at home—sharing a meal, opening their favourite South African wines, and raising a glass to the legacy and future of the industry.
“Each harvest is a reminder of how far we’ve come as an industry,” says Jean Naudé, CEO of Groot Constantia. “This event brings us together to reflect on our shared journey and celebrate the passion and collaboration that continue to drive South African wine forward.”
The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event is made possible through the support of Groot Constantia, platinum partner Standard Bank, and sponsor partners Air France-KLM, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, South Africa Wine, Die Burger, Seabourne Logistics, SmileFM, and Vinpro.
“Wine is ultimately a story of people, place, and patience. Our partnership with the South African wine industry is built on these same principles—long-term commitment and shared ambition,” says Karel-Günther Jordaan, Standard Bank Regional Agribusiness Manager. “We stand alongside farmers and winemakers as they invest in the next season, innovate, and build businesses that endure.”
