CTEMF kicks off in Cape Town

20140206-100227.jpgThe third edition of the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival kicks off in Cape Town on this Friday and will run through until Sunday, 9th February 2014.

Headliners were announced via social media in December 2013 – deep house don Dixon (Germany), drum ‘n bass trio Noisia (Netherlands) and hip hop pioneer DJ The Original Jazzy Jay (US) are the house, bass and hip hop headliners respectively – only three of the thirteen high profile acts making up the first announcement.

Other acts that were later revealed include US house producer Justin Martin, UK bass hero Caspa, a collaborative performance from local stars Jullian Gomes and Culoe De Song, one of South Africa’s most successful trance exports DJ/Producer Protoculture, Black Coffee, Dirty Paraffin, Haezer, Portable (UK), J.Phlip (US) and Crazy White Boy.

Established in 2012 as a platform to celebrate the progress made by South Africa’s electronic music scene over the last fifteen years, The Cape Town Electronic Music Festival (CTEMF) is gaining recognition as one of the most relevant and forward-thinking events in South Africa’s calendar.

CTEMF’s objectives are simple: annually presenting South Africa’s most interesting and innovative electronic artists to a local and international audience – thereby contributing to the growth of electronic music culture in a inclusive, positive and responsible way.

With a development-focused program that includes workshops, lectures, artist and label showcases in both main cities and townships – CTEMF aims to create opportunities for those willing to be a force for change regardless of their socio-economic standing.

Through a comprehensive and ever-expanding representation of South Africa’s dynamic electronic music scene, CTEMF’s reach now transcends socio-economic, racial and geographical boundaries.

The first edition of CTEMF in 2012 boasted a 100% South African line up over 3 days, creating awareness and confidence within the local scene about its own achievements.

In 2013 CTEMF presented one international guest – techno pioneer Richie Hawtin. Globally recognized for his forward-thinking approach to making and playing electronic music, Richie Hawtin embodies relentless innovation and the development of the global electronic music movement.

The 2014 edition of CTEMF signals the festival’s evolution from Cape Town’s electronic music festival into an internationally relevant music festival anchored in Cape Town. With its fundamental principles still rooted in the unified growth of the South African scene, 2014 will see the line-up at CTEMF transform to reflect its global relevance.

The festival’s satellite event series will reach further across South Africa and the extended workshop program will uncover and connect the industry with upcoming talent in an unprecedented way.

What sets CTEMF apart is its strong focus on industry development and the sharing of skills. In the lead up to the festival, workshops are held all over Cape Town and give aspiring producers and aficionados the opportunity to learn new skills and interact with industry leaders.

Similarly, CTEMF involves local event organisers and crews who are pushing boundaries and playing key roles within the various local music movements. CTEMF joins forces with them via satellite events that will be happening all over the city and around the country.
