Review: First Thursdays Cape Town

Cape Town was it’s usual magical self this Thursday – the first of the month – which we all have come to know and love. Store fronts gleamed invitingly, music of all different genres pumped from all sides and the weather got it’s shit together enough to be pleasant (small jumper and long pants pleasant, not Summer evening pleasant). The streets from Buitengracht to Bree were thronging with thrift store shoppers, craft market folk & beer garden guys and girls.

img_2307We went to Cape Electric Tattoo’s first (of hopefully many) “Beers on us, tattoos on you” nights. R600 – R1600 got you a kiff full colour flash of you choice by the very very talented Waldo del Rocca, Gareth Lloyd and Hilary Randal and a few cold ones while you waited. The vibe was great, after a short walk round to check out what was on offer we headed to Mexican on Long Street for beer and burritos – nursing our new bandaged ink.

If tattoos aren’t your thing there’s plenty more to FT, with pop up installations, art work (some for sale) at the many different galleries, some street performances (come early for these), museums with open doors until late and just the spirit – which is enough for some. The streets are filled with eager faces, friends and family walking around and appreciating the city after dark.

Here’s what you missed (if you missed it – don’t do it again!) and the official website.
